Michelle Swanson, nationally certified resume writer, shared her expertise with SIUE PRSSA members as part of their “Getting Ready for the ” programming. Swanson gave several tips on how to write an effective resume. Some of the tips included:
- Using key words that align specifically with the position/company
- Highlighting skills/education relevant to the position
- Focusing on outcomes; don’t just list job duties
- Considering graphic/color elements judiciously; know the culture of the company
- Choosing fonts wisely; Arial, Tahoma, Garamond are good choices
According to Swanson, these tips help ensure your resume will make it through the applicant tracking systems that many companies use today. This also means not using a “cookie-cutter” resume – sending out the same resume for every position. Although this may seem like a daunting task for new graduates who are sending out multiple resumes, Swanson provided students with some great time-saving tips on how to accomplish this without rewriting their entire resume each time. She also provided several examples and gave multiple online resources that will help students with the resume writing process.
Writing an effective resume will hopefully result in getting an interview. Colleen Kennedy from the University of Iowa PRSSA, shared “5 Tips for Success in a PR Interview” in a blog post that also gives students some great advice.
Whether you are looking for an internship or wrapping up your senior year and beginning the job search, these tips are sure to help everyone be successful.
In the meantime, pull up a chair and let’s talk.
