PRSSA members took advantage of the opportunity to tour Fleishman-Hillard public relations firm in St. Louis this past Friday. Fleishman-Hillard is one of the world’s largest public relations firms with more than 80 offices in 28 countries, and their headquarters is located right here in St. Louis.
During the tour, PRSSA members visited the firm’s PR, research, and creative and digital areas. Visiting each area offered interesting and unexpected insights into the public relations industry for the students. In listening to each of the associates in these departments, students could see the value in the classes they are currently taking, such as research methods, case studies and media writing just to name a few. It also gave them ideas on specific skills they might want to enhance through their minor or other electives while in college.
Jason Hillery, senior vice president and partner at Fleishman-Hillard, provided students with an informative and engaging tour of the firm. Hillery also provided internship information to each of the students. The application process is highly competitive for these paid internships. Some of the key qualifications that the firm looks for in candidates include:
- Completed junior year of undergraduate study; or recent graduates
- At least a 3.2 GPA
- Strong and proven writing and communication or graphic design skills
- Experience in digital communications and/or media convergence
Being a member of PRSSA can help students meet some of these criteria too – such as with the social media workshop coming up at the next meeting on Nov. 30.
