It’s been three years since I surprised my husband with a very special Valentine’s Day gift…a John Deere tractor! But this was not just any tractor, it was a 1949 John Deere Model A…the tractor he used growing up on his family farm.
His mom had sold the farm and the tractor after his dad passed away in 1985. The daughter of the man who bought the tractor happened to be in St. Louis and invited us to lunch. I took the opportunity to deliver a tin (a John Deere tin) of my famous homemade sugar cookies to her, but at the bottom of that tin, was a secret note to her dad asking if he would sell the tractor to me.
Long story short…I bought the tractor and all of his brothers and sisters came down to witness the surprise! Now, three years later, Jim has it fully restored and it has been selected to be put on display in the John Deere Pavilion in Moline, Illinois. The story is also in their recent newsletter (see page 6).
Talk about a great family story!
